OCEAN PROGRAMS
Grouped by birth year, Ocean programs are yearlong (January to December) and are designed to be fun and age appropriate. The focus January to March is on developing fitness for the track & field season. As the weather improves in March, technical aspects and specialty coaching are introduced. Outdoor competition starts in late April and continues to the end of July. After resting in August (no Ocean training), the focus shifts to cross country running (or base training for the next track & field season) for September to November. Program descriptions are provided below. See SCHEDULE for training days and times.
***OCEAN ATHLETICS DOES NOT OFFER SUMMER CAMPS***
CONSIDERATIONS
Being successful in athletics takes commitment, time and effort. Athletes that attend 2-3 training sessions per week achieve the best results and enjoy the most value from their membership. Our most successful athletes (provincial and national team members) attend training consistently in all safe weather conditions. Ultimately, being successful requires athletes (of all ages) to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Although we recognize that not all our athletes have the same skills, we require all of them to give their best effort at each session.
ALL OCEAN ATHLETES ARE EXPECTED TO:
Be ready to start training on time (recommend arriving 10 minutes early).
Listen to coaches and follow instructions.
Give their best effort during each training session.
Be a good team member by being positive and encouraging others.
Manage themselves appropriately in a structured training environment.
Athletes that do not meet these expectations may not be a good fit for Ocean Athletics programs.

VOLUNTEER BOND
Running a track & field club is a team sport. We rely on our families to tackle the 1001 jobs needed to keep Ocean Athletics a great club for us all. To achieve this, Ocean families each complete at least 6 hours of volunteer work per year, regardless of the number of athletes they have in the club. To ensure that we all contribute to our success, a $200 Volunteer Bond per family is added during registration to all yearlong programs. When volunteer hours are complete, families may apply online (see VOLUNTEERING) for their bond to be returned. When approved, the bond is refunded to the credit card used for registration.
NEW FOR 2026 - ATHLETES BORN IN 2014 & 2013
Ocean Athletics is a competitive track and field club. Success in athletics requires commitment, consistency, and hard work. To ensure our programs continue to meet our athletes’ needs, we are implementing a 2-session trial process for applicants born in 2014 and 2013 (grades 6 and 7). Before committing for the year, prospective members must demonstrate that they can meet these Ocean athlete expectations:
Be ready to start training on time.
Listen to coaches and follow instructions.
Give their best effort during each training session.
Be a good team member by being positive and encouraging others.
Manage themselves appropriately in a structured training environment.
The focus is on attitude and not on competitive performance. In our experience, from attitude comes behaviour, effort and commitment. For these reasons, only athletes that demonstrate a good attitude will be invited to join after the 2-session trial.
REQUEST A 2-SESSION TRIAL:
Click the "REGISTER FOR 2026 HERE!” button on the REGISTRATION page.
Create an AthleticsReg account (or use an existing account if you have another athlete in the club).
Add your athlete to the “WAIT LIST”.
A 2-Session Trial Application will be emailed to you within 48-hours.
There is no Ocean club fee for the 2-session trial. However, a BC Athletics trial membership must be purchased ($10 plus fees). This provides insurance. The link to purchase the trial membership will be emailed to you when your trial application is processed. If your athlete is invited to continue after the 2-session trial, the $10 paid will be applied as a credit towards the full competitive BC Athletics membership required.
2-session trials will be available starting on January 12, 2026, for programs with available space. Applications will be reviewed starting on January 8, 2026.
